Capsule Selection - (Survival Craft, Lifeboat Capsules, Lifeboat Servicing )
Step One: Design

It is essential to select a design that protects your workers from "human error" that could kill or injure them.

Twin fall launch systems have killed and injured an unacceptable number of workers during drills and maintenance in the last ten years. Click here to see the Marine Accident Investigation Branch report entitled "Escape, Evacuation and Recovery".

Since the introduction of our Company designed release mechanism, (hook release), in 1982, single cable launched survival capsules have not injured or killed a single offshore worker as a result of either mechanical failure or human error.

Hook Maintenance

NO cams, NO Internal springs,
NO cables and NO need for adjustment

Step Two: Select a design that is "user friendly"
A.  If during the descent to the sea the hook release is prematurely activated, in error, the design of the hook is such that the weight of the capsule will cause the hook to lock securely until the capsule is safely in the water.

In contrast many twin fall lifeboat hooks if prematurely activated will allow the boat to fall into the sea because the design of the release mechanism is such that the weight of the boat is used to open the hook when under load.

Hook Up

B. Our release mechanism is designed so that if the hook is not correctly locked inside the capsule the snout of the hook automatically, by gravity, drops inside the housing and prevents the "hook up man" from attaching a lifting link.

This prevents the survival craft from being lifted out of the water by an unsafe, incorrectly locked hook that could release the lifeboat when it is suspended above the sea.

C. When "hooking up" after training drill the design of the capsule allows the helmsman to see the hook at all times and to be able to speak directly to the "hook up man".

This teamwork between the helmsman and the hook up man builds confidence in the system. When the men know that they can smoothly recover the survival capsule they are more likely to train with the system and use it effectively in an emergency.

Such teamwork on a twin fall boat is impossible as the helmsman cannot even see the hooks.

D. Hook Design
Our hook has no cams, no internal springs, no cables and no need for adjustment. A design that eliminates these ingredients that have in other hooks led to "human error" accidents.
E.

The survival capsule is designed so that it can be lifted out of the water by a crane and put on deck for maintenance without use of a special lifting bar or girder.

This is not possible with twin fall boats.

F. The survival capsule does not requires a special cradle to be placed on deck to prevent the boat falling on its side during inspection and maintenance. The survival capsule is designed to be "free standing".

All twin fall boats require having
a special cradle available on deck.
